Navigating the Latest NDIS Updates 2024: What You Need to Know
At Rock Support Services, we know how important it is to stay informed about changes that may impact you. We’re eager to share the latest updates from the NDIS, introduced in October 2024, that are set to make accessing support clearer and easier for participants. In this article, we’ll walk you through the key changes to help you navigate the updates.
What Are the Changes?
Accessing the NDIS: Disability and Early Intervention Pathways
The NDIS has introduced two pathways to make the application process clearer. When you apply to join the NDIS, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) will tell you whether you qualify under the disability or early intervention requirements. Early intervention is designed to help people who need support before their condition worsens. The separate pathways ensure you receive the right support based on your needs.
This change impacts people applying to access the NDIS. While the new participant pathways are not fully designed yet, this step will help you understand how and why you do or don’t meet the criteria.
Clearer Definitions of NDIS Supports
NDIS supports are services or equipment the NDIS will pay for to assist with disabilities. The updated laws specify that NDIS funds can only be spent on services and items that are NDIS-approved supports. This change ensures that participants are using their funds correctly. There are also new “replacement supports” for people who are searching for support that isn’t listed. If a replacement may be like the support you were looking for, you can find a list of available support here.
Changes to NDIS Plans and Funding
In the past, NDIS plans would list out the funding for each type of support individually. Now, with the recent changes, participants will see the total amount of funding they have for disability support services. This update makes it easier to understand how much support you’re entitled to and helps you plan how long your funding will last. Over time, the length of NDIS plans may be extended beyond 12 months for some participants, but this will depend on individual circumstances.
Why Are These Changes Happening?
The Australian Government is making these updates to strengthen the NDIS and improve participant experience. By introducing clearer guidelines and making the system more transparent, the goal is to help participants better understand their entitlements and ensure that NDIS funding is used effectively.
What You Should Do Now
If you’re already an NDIS participant, continue using your funding as your current plan dictates.
If you’re applying for NDIS after October 3, 2024, you’ll receive information about whether you meet the disability or early intervention requirements.
