Overcoming Physical Challenges with Disabilities
Whether you were diagnosed with a physical disability early in life or suffered a life-changing injury that impaired your physical abilities, it can be easy to forget what you are capable of. However, the success of our Australian Paralympians has proved otherwise, showing others how they can reach their fullest potential with the help of disability support services, including physical and mental health support.
Mental Health Support
The journey to overcoming physical limitations begins with addressing the limiting beliefs that often hold individuals back from engaging in physical activity. This highlights the critical need for mental health support within disability support services. Psychologists emphasise that therapy can be instrumental in helping people express their challenges, identify what’s keeping them from moving forward, and understand how these barriers impact their lives. With the right guidance, individuals can develop strategies to manage or ease their symptoms, which is especially crucial for those with disabilities. Mental health struggles can create additional psychological hurdles, sometimes slowing progress and leading to feelings of hopelessness about regaining physical function. By acknowledging these limiting beliefs and creating a clear plan, individuals can shift their focus toward achieving physical capabilities with renewed clarity and determination.
Rehabilitation and Physical Disability Support
Rehabilitation and disability support services are essential to gaining physical competency and can lead to great results. A physiotherapist often facilitates rehabilitation, and support workers can help maintain and track their client’s progress by continuing recommended exercises and engaging in physical activity.
This can include helping someone gain walking abilities after an accident or slowly introducing them to a sport. If a person has suffered from a long-term physical condition, there are plenty of opportunities to participate in a sport or physical activity that aligns with their abilities.
In Rockhampton, inclusive sports like wheelchair basketball at Frenchville Sports Club and para-archery at Peace International Archery Club offer opportunities for people with disabilities to stay active. These activities not only support physical health but can also lead to competitive sports, as seen with para-archer Taymon Kenton-Smith, who’s achieved incredible success in his sport.
Australian Paralympians Paving the Way to Sporting Success.
Rockhampton Paralympian Joel Coughlan’s journey highlights the power of disability support services and how they can truly transform lives. After a workplace accident at 21 that resulted in leg and muscle damage, Joel relied on extensive rehabilitation and support to regain his confidence and athletic skills. His resilience led him to incredible achievements, including defeating the world’s number three at the 2011 ITTF Para-Table Tennis Asia and Oceania Championships and winning his first international gold medal at the 2019 Arafura Games.
Similarly, wheelchair basketball team member Phil Evans shows how dedicated rehabilitation and a combination of physical and mental health support can foster confidence and excellence in sports. While not everyone may aim to become a professional athlete, these inspiring Australians demonstrate what’s possible with commitment, resilience, and the right support.
